What Would Freire Do: Teaching Grammar

"Liberating education consists in acts of cognition, not transferrals of information."
Paulo Freire, "The 'Banking' Concept of Education" (265).

You will develop the lesson plan in class on Wednesday; you will teach your section on Monday, 2/3.

Choose your section:

SMH 9: Verb Forms (172-81)

bullet

Length of Lesson: Approximately 5-7 minutes

bullet

Scope of Lesson: Material covered in specific section

bullet

Objective of Lesson:
bullet

To promote a comprehension of the specific topic (think of how this differs from memorization of material).

bullet

To empower students by "demystifying" the material

bullet

To understand these "rules" of grammar in relation to making meaning and communicating

Here are some questions to help you to begin developing your lesson:

bullet

How do you think Freire would view grammar in relationship to writing, expression, and ultimately, liberation?

bullet

Would Freire suggest "teaching" grammar at all (what might be the term he would use, or the way he would approach it)?

bullet

What methods might he use?
